To return an online purchase in South Korea, open the order in the shopping app or website, select 반품 신청 (banpum sincheong, “request a return”), choose a reason, and follow the instructions for return shipping. If the item is simply unsuitable, you will usually pay the return shipping cost. If it is defective, damaged, missing parts, or substantially different from the listing, the seller generally pays.
The most important deadline is usually seven days from receiving the item for a change-of-mind return. This is a legal withdrawal period for many online purchases, but exceptions apply, and individual marketplaces may offer longer or simpler return policies. Start the request through the platform as soon as possible, even if you have not yet handed the parcel to a courier.
The basic return process
- Open your order history. Look for 주문 내역 (jumun naeyeok, order history), 구매 내역 (gumae naeyeok, purchase history), or 배송 조회 (baesong j 조회, delivery tracking). On a marketplace, the return button is normally attached to the specific order.
- Select the return option. Common labels include 반품 신청 (request a return), 교환 신청 (request an exchange), and 취소 신청 (request cancellation). If the package has already arrived, choose a return rather than an order cancellation.
- Choose the reason accurately. Typical options include 단순 변심 (dansun byeonsim, changed my mind), 상품 불량 (sangpum bullyang, defective product), 오배송 (odobaesong, wrong item shipped), and 상품 설명과 다름 (different from the product description).
- Check who pays shipping. For a change-of-mind return, the platform may deduct the return fee from your refund or ask you to pay it separately. For a defective or incorrect item, select the problem accurately and upload photographs if requested.
- Follow the collection or shipping instructions. The seller may arrange a courier pickup, give you a prepaid label, or provide a return address. Do not send the item to an address found only on an old invoice or product page unless the platform confirms it.
- Keep proof of return. Save the courier receipt, tracking number, photos of the packed item, and screenshots of the return request until the refund appears.
What the seven-day rule means
Under South Korea’s Act on Consumer Protection in Electronic Commerce, a consumer can generally withdraw from an online purchase within seven days of receiving the goods. The day of delivery is not normally counted as day one; the period begins on the following day. If the final day falls on a weekend or public holiday, the deadline may move to the next business day under the applicable counting rules. The seller’s own policy may provide a longer period, but it should not remove a consumer’s statutory rights.
You normally only need to communicate your intention to withdraw within the period. The parcel does not necessarily have to arrive back with the seller within those seven days, although you should return it promptly and follow the platform’s instructions. A useful approach is to submit the return request immediately and arrange the shipment the same day.
When you pay return shipping
If you are returning an unused item because you changed your mind, chose the wrong size, or no longer want it, the return shipping cost is generally yours. In Korean shopping interfaces, this is often described as 단순 변심 반품 배송비—return shipping for a change of mind. Some sellers charge one delivery fee; others charge the original shipping plus the return shipping, particularly when the original order qualified for free delivery.
If the seller sent the wrong product, the item arrived damaged, or the product is materially different from the advertisement, the seller generally bears the return cost. Choose the correct reason and provide evidence. A photograph of the shipping label, the unopened package, the damage, or the difference between the listing and the item can prevent the return from being treated as a change-of-mind request.
Items that may not be returnable
The seven-day right is not unlimited. A return may be refused when the product’s value has substantially fallen because you used it, damaged it, removed necessary packaging, or made it difficult to resell. This is why it is safest to inspect clothing, shoes, electronics, and household goods without removing tags or protective seals until you are sure you will keep them.
Common exceptions can include:
- sealed goods whose seal has been broken, where the seal is necessary to protect resale value;
- custom-made or personalized products that were produced according to your specifications;
- fresh food and other goods that can deteriorate or expire;
- digital content once delivery or use has begun, depending on the product and consent process;
- items whose value has significantly decreased through use or damage.
These categories depend on the facts and the seller’s legally valid notice. A shop cannot automatically defeat consumer protections simply by writing “no returns” in a product description.
Returning an item as a foreign resident
You usually do not need a Korean phone number to hand a parcel to a courier, but you may need one to create an account, receive delivery notifications, or use a marketplace’s automated return system. Some Korean shopping sites also require Korean identity verification, a local payment method, or a domestic address before they allow an online return request.
If the app blocks you, contact the seller through 판매자 문의 (panmaeja munui, seller inquiry) or customer service. Ask for a return address and written confirmation of who pays the shipping fee. A foreign card does not automatically change the return rules, but the refund may take longer to appear, and some platforms refund to store credit unless you specifically request the original payment method.
Useful Korean phrases include:
- 반품하고 환불받고 싶습니다. Banpumhago hwanbulbatgo sipseumnida. — I would like to return this and receive a refund.
- 단순 변심으로 반품 신청합니다. Dansun byeonsimeuro banpum sincheonghamnida. — I am requesting a return because I changed my mind.
- 상품이 불량입니다. Sangpumi bullyangimnida. — The product is defective.
- 반품 배송비는 누가 부담하나요? Banpum baesongbineun nuga budamhanayo? — Who pays the return shipping fee?
- 환불은 언제 처리되나요? Hwanbureun eonje cheoridoenayo? — When will the refund be processed?
If the seller refuses the return
First, capture screenshots of the product listing, return policy, order details, delivery date, messages, and photographs of the item. Then send a clear written request through the platform rather than relying only on a phone call. State the delivery date, the reason for return, and whether you are requesting a change-of-mind return or reporting a defect.
배송받은 날로부터 7일 이내에 반품 의사를 표시했습니다. 반품 접수와 환불 절차를 안내해 주세요.
Baesongbadeun nal-ro부터 chil-il inaee banpum uisareul pyosihaetseumnida. Banpum jeopsuwa hwanbul jeolchareul annaehae juseyo.
“I notified you of my intention to return within seven days of receiving the item. Please explain the return and refund procedure.”
If the matter is not resolved, consumers in South Korea can seek guidance through the 1372 Consumer Counseling Center and use the Consumer24 dispute-support system. Keep your evidence and shipping records. If a platform offers only an exchange or store credit when you are legally entitled to a refund, point to the reason for the return and request escalation.
How refunds usually work
The seller generally processes the refund after the returned item is received or the return is otherwise confirmed. For a statutory withdrawal, the law requires the seller to refund within three business days after receiving the returned goods, subject to the applicable conditions. In practice, the card issuer, bank, or payment platform may need additional time to display the refund.
Before sending anything, confirm three details: the return deadline, the shipping fee, and the refund method. Those three points prevent most avoidable problems when returning an online purchase in South Korea.
